Adoration presents Sam Lam?s love of elegant sculptural forms found in western antiquity.?The beauty and decadence of past civilizations, particularly classical Greek figures, come alive in his homage to statues from museums and archeological sites in England, France and Turkey.?????

Using photographs and sketches made on-site, Lam creates graceful, radiant paintings of male and female figures originally sculpted from marble. He achieves an ephemeral glow through a Pointillist treatment of space, light and shape combined with a delicate, subtle use of colour. Several paintings are juxtaposed with applied pieces of metal on the canvas and contemporary handcrafted metal frames as a further tribute of the present giving reverence to the past.?

Born in 1963, Sam Lam studied at the Guangzhou College of Art before immigrating to Canada in 1981. He became a Canadian citizen in 1985 and graduated with an honours degree in painting from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1987. He was among five Chinese artists included in ?Here Not There? at the Vancouver Art Gallery (1995), an exhibit that explored issues related to artists born and educated in China who have re-established themselves in Vancouver. His paintings are in collections across Canada, the United States and Asia including the National Gallery of China, Beijing.

Lam has shown with Diane Farris Gallery since 1992.
